AKWESASNE — Mr. Ian A. Seymour, 55, of 60 Seymour Road, suddenly passed away on Saturday evening, April 23, 2011, at Cornwall Community Hospital, with his family and friends by his side.

From a HAVFD member to family and friends at Ian's wake:

On Saturday April 23, 2011 the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department lost a special friend Ian Seymour.  He was a brother and a person that volunteered his time, when we asked for his help, even though he was not a member of our fire department he came to our rescue.

He was a community member that cared, and put in hours working on one of our fan boats after we came off the river. He occasionally was welding stress cracks adding an extra brace to make the fan boat safer for his fire department friends. He never asked for any monetary payment and he said to the fire department members “you guys do a lot for the community”.

To the Seymour and the Roundpoint family and friends “Ian” will be missed, but the work he did for our fire department will never be forgotten.

Exit speech from Former Chief Norman Peters to the membership

" I take this opportunity to thank the membership of the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department in supporting me as their Fire Chief during the last four years. Each one of you helped me in your own way. I could always rely on you fire fighters to arrive on scene and turn any emergency into a minor problem. I will never forget the experience you gave me.

The skills and dedication of each firefighter is what makes the HAVFD the best service organization in the area. Any time, day or night, we show up to help someone when they call for help.

The future of HAVFD is in good hands. The new Line Officers have experience and training to lead the fire department. I encourage each member to continue training each Monday evening at apparatus and radio checks, at each monthly drill and attend every available local, county and state training opporunity. We older members need to teach our younger members the safe way to use our equipment and to operate our apparatus. We need to continue training together to prevent injury to ourselves.

I now will sit in the back row with past chiefs Frank, John, Charlie and Donnie at the monthly meetings. As you know the past chiefs are there to help you even though we are going to complain about everything.

Leadership is a skill gained by experience. I found the hardest thing to do was to step back and delegate the responsibility. Incident Command is getting the right person for the job. Every person has a special skill or experience you can use.

See you all at the next HAVFD fire call.

Firefigher Norman Peters"

The Hogansburg Volunteer Fire Department was organized in March, 1954 following a fire in which seven children died when a home owned by the Cree family was completely destroyed. This tragic fire was considered to be the beginning of the Hogansburg Volunteer Fire Department. Due to the Cree Family's loss and courage to go on, people from the community began to organize a fire department.

Charter Members were:  Edgar Reyome, Paul Heffelfinger, Clarence Thomspon, Stanley Conners, Hubert Lantry, Abe White, John Kish, Louis Jacobs Sr., Carl Wiggar, James S Rouselle, Eli Lazore, Harry White, Harry Pyke, Sly Morin, Ray Aldrich Jr., Walter Herne, Peter Bero and Paul Jock.

Edgar Reyome, owner of a local grocery store, was the leader of the group and became the first chief operating with a used fire engine which was parked in Reyome's backyard. Another local storekeeper, Hubert Lantry, donated an old garage to be used as a fire station. The garage's loft was used to hold meetings.

In 1960 the Hogansburg Volunteer Fire Dept. build a new station of cinder block construction, 100 by 60 feet. The company had three pieces of apparatus and was equipped for mutual aid assistance. James S. Rouselle was chief in 1960 succeeding Edgar Reyome, who held that post for six years. Other officers included Hurbert Lantry, President; Francis Donahue, Secretary; and Syl Morin, Treasurer.

From the Desk of Chief Norman Peters September 16, 2009

I want to thank all the members of the HAVFD who were able to provide the help and time for the wake and funeral service for James Buz Rouselle.  It was a very respectful ceremony and service.

Thank you to all the neighboring fire departments who came over to support us and provided an escort to the church.

All this help and initiative to plan and organize an event like this makes it easy for me to be Chief.
